Are you eligible for £140 towards your winter energy bills?

As part of our Community Energy Ambasadors project, funded by Northern Gas Networks, we are raising awareness of the Warm Home Discount across the north of England. This is a £140 grant that certain households can apply for to help with their heating costs over the winter. It is a government scheme but it is run by the energy suppliers.


Who is eligible for the payment?

1)     The Core Group

You will get the payment automatically if anyone in your household gets the Guarantee element of Pension Credit. 

2)     The Broader Group

The Broader Group includes households in receipt of a certain combination of means-tested benefits. You may also be eligible if your annual household income is less than £16,190 and if you have young children, someone with a disability or someone of pensionable age within the home. The exact criteria varies depending on the energy supplier. If you fall within this group you have to apply for the payment.


How to apply for the payment?

You can either apply online or by calling your energy supplier – you need to check the eligibility criteria for your own supplier to see whether you qualify and you will need your electricity account number. Schemes open for applications in August/September and most will close by 31st January (some close earlier) so apply as soon as you can.


When is the payment made?

The payment is made any time between October and March but it is usually towards the end of this six month period.


How is the payment made?

For customers with credit meters for gas and electricity (i.e. you pay when you get a bill or by monthly direct debit), the £140 will appear as a credit on your energy bill.

For customers with prepayment meters, you will be sent vouchers or a bar-coded letter – you can then take this to the post office/Paypoint and the £140 will be credited to your card or key.


Does my energy supplier offer the scheme?

Some of the very small energy suppliers are not part of the scheme. You can check whether your supplier offers the Warm Home Discount here: https://www.gov.uk/the-warm-home-discount-scheme/energy-suppliers

Please note that if your electricity is supplied by Utilita then you will not be able to apply for the Warm Home Discount for winter 2021/22. Their scheme only accepted applications from 11th - 18th August 2021.
